Minister of Education And Technical And Vocational Training, the Hon. Glenys Hanna Martin attended the Crisis Center’s Peace In Our Schools launch press event on Wednesday where she spoke about the impact of crime on education.

Hanna Martin commented on the need for parents to play a greater role in their children’s education. “We launched a parent unit in the Ministry of Education because we’re seeking to engage parents in their children’s education. Don’t send them to me and then say go fix it. You can do that and I’ll do my best but you can’t wash your hands when you send your children. Me and you gat to work together with this child to make sure this child reaches his or her full potential. So our parent unit is designed to incite greater engagement of parents and its getting better.”

The Minister added that crime is a wake up call to all of us. She said, “this is what I love about what is happening with the Crisis Center because as Dr. Patterson said, we ain’ ga let it happen. We’re not going to sit down and be overtaken. The last thing I want to say is that we are seeing more young people being impacted by violence. This is a serious phenomenon, very serious phenomenon. And young people engaging in violence of a very serious nature.”

Hanna Martin’s comments come days after two teen males were shot and killed on Faith Avenue on Monday evening.
