Attorney General, Sen. Hon. Ryan Pinder recently commented on the call from Amnesty International to halt Haitian repatriations as unrest continues in that country.

Pinder told reporters, “the challenges that we face as a small island country and the country that is really most exposed to illegal migrant activity coming from Haiti compared to other Caribbean countries. And so we sympathize with the situation in Haiti, I think the Prime Minister has aways been very clear on that. We do what we can do assist the situation diplomatically but we also have a priority that we must protect our borders and we must protect our country that is our sovereign right. We’ll continue to do that with a sympathetic approach.”

CARICOM leaders recently convened a meeting in Jamaica on the way forward for Haiti after the resignation of Haitian Prime Minister, Ariel Henry. It was announced that transitional presidential council will be established. The Council will appoint a new Prime Minister and ministers of government.
