Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation, the Hon. Chester Cooper responded to claims that the current administration is abusing the public purse with regards to the purchase of a new vehicle for use by the Prime Minister and the Prime Minister’s frequent travel.

Cooper spoke to reporters on Thursday saying, “the Office of the Prime Minister released a statement yesterday in relation to the state vehicle. We stand by the statement.”

The Acting Prime Minister also commented on the need for the Prime Minister to travel. “This is an important responsibility. We take our obligation to The Bahamas and to the region seriously. The Bahamas and Prime Minister Davis has shown great leadership in the work that he is doing, that he is doing on climate change, the economy, on investments, on education, on healthcare and innovation. The work of government is a serious undertaking and we cannot be distracted by the noise of the Opposition.”

Cooper also compared the visit of United States Vice President, Kamala Harris to The Bahamas to that of former Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis’ visit to Washington D.C. where he was pictured waiting in a hallway. He said, “running a country demands that we are respected by our international partners, by our neighbours and by world leaders. The Prime Minister is about ensuring credibility, respect for The Bahamas and to ensure that when we call the world leaders pick up the phone on the first ring.”
